Electronic Earthing & Grounding Systems
Electronic Earthing & Grounding Systems diminish the static risk generated by fast-flowing liquids in pipes during tanker loading. The need to eliminate static build-up is proven and, in many cases, mandatory.
Loading and unloading road tankers with large volumes of flammable liquids and powders generate enormous amounts of electrostatic charge, which, if left to accumulate on a road tanker, could discharge incendive sparks that exceed the minimum ignition energies of a vast range of combustible gases, vapours and dust. By specifying Electronic Earthing & Grounding Systems, you can prevent the ignition of such atmospheres by using static electricity and ensuring the road tanker has a verified connection to the Earth.
These grounding systems can give drums and road tankers a simple yet effective earth continuity. The road tanker version monitors the condition of the earth signal and provides a permissive signal for the process operation. Deprivation of the earth continuity or attempts to avoid using the earthing system will eliminate the permissive signal, stopping the process.
When purchasing fall prevention or loading arms, it makes sense to get your Carbis Loadtec contact to advise you on the best way to solve the static issue. Even if you have a simple cable and clip now, it doesn’t mean it is being used correctly. By having a verifiable earth connection, you can be sure it is safe to load or unload. Indeed, many of our clients not operating in a zoned environment still choose to employ an intelligent earth system as a matter of good practice across the site.

Static electricity as a hazard
Although static electricity is generally regarded as a nuisance, its effects can be devastating in hazardous process industries. Static electricity discharges have been identified as the ignition source for various processes that cut across different industry groups.
